Ruby+Diva: The Chic Wedding Boutique

Over the weekend, I met up with a couple of friends at the Bloomsbury Art Fair. I had once written about them following their wedding reception at the Cheyne Walk brasserie, which you can read about here.

Since that gorgeous afternoon, the couple have set up ruby+diva and in case you’re planning to get married, I wanted to give you an idea of who and what was behind this chic one-stop wedding boutique. So, I asked ruby+diva’s co-founder, Sara, a few questions …

CG: Why did you start up ruby+diva?

R+D: The idea of ruby+diva came to me after planning two weddings to my husband, Rob, last year. We had organised a large country hotel wedding for the winter of 2011 and had even paid all the deposits but, in early March 2011, we decided that we didn’t want to wait that long, scrapped all the plans and ended up getting hitched in Chelsea Register Office on the King’s Road a few weeks later instead.

I am an obsessive researcher so, by this time, I had files of information on the most unique wedding products and services out there. I realised that it would save couples hours of research if I made the information available to them and from there ruby+diva was born.

CG: I love winter weddings, what are your top tips for planning one?

R+D: Winter weddings are wonderful as, because it gets dark so early, you can be hugely creative with lighting. I love tall candles in fireplaces and flowers entwined with fairy lights as centre pieces and around doorways.

You can also get away with more formal and period-style wedding dresses, such as the stunning bespoke gowns by Elisabeth Armstrong. I especially love her navy and white gown, Midnight White, with the little matching hat. We are just about to add the most unusual feather and antique brooch capes to our accessories section which are ideal for wintry cover-ups.

CG: Who is your favourite fashion designer and why?

R+D: I admire the creativity and flamboyance of Vivienne Westwood. Her designs flatter womanly figures but also add shape and curves to those lacking in that department. She has her own defined style and doesn’t give a fig about following trends.

CG: What is so different about ruby+diva?

R+D: ruby+diva is the first online marketplace catering for couples who want a little something different on their wedding day.

We have sourced hundreds of original wedding ideas from around the world and brought them to our website – from bespoke wedding gowns and vintage brooch bouquets to hand-painted stationery and alternative wedding gifts.

We even have our very own travel expert, Laura from Passepartout Travel, to help couples plan a truly ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ honeymoon. Laura puts together an inspirational honeymoon itinerary every month – her latest hot pick is set in the Aman Group’s new wow-factor hotels in Turkey and Montenegro.

CG: Who are the characters, ‘Ruby’ and ‘Diva’ based on and why?

R+D: The idea behind ‘ruby+diva’ is that we cater for every woman’s individual and eclectic sense of style. Ruby is the theatrical, flamboyant one, whilst Diva is the chic and glamorous style queen.

I asked the artist, Sophie Morgan, to come up with a line drawing of two women encapsulating these ideals for our logo and we finally selected Vivienne Westwood and Florence Welch as the embodiment of ‘Ruby’ and Erin O’Connor and Audrey Tautou as ‘Diva’!
